Questions on KJ
How can anyone compare what is going on in the Town of Monroe to what happened in 1938? All of us who live in this area moved here for various reasons. Unlike the KJ residents, we all do not live in the same neighborhoods as the rest of our respective nationality or religious cultures.
The KJ community wants to remain separate from the rest of the town. There is a school district that really is a private school (Can you send your child there?) Is the food kosher? Are there religious symbols in the school? Do they pray? The women are not allowed to drive (it''s the 21st century), so the streets were allowed to have buses running again. I do see the women taking taxis and the minibus. Why isn''t that sufficient? The KJ community doesn''t want Monroe to have a new library. Would it be a public library if KJ had one? No one is telling others how many children to have. Is it realistic to have more children than you can afford?

Webmaster's Response:

Dear Janet:

In 1938, the Nazi regime began implementing its “Big Lie Theory” to justify its need to deal with the so-called “Jewish problem.” How this non-existent problem was solved will forever live in infamy. ( The following excerpt is from  “Mein Kampf” James Murphy translation, page 134 ).

All this was inspired by the principle - which is quite true in itself - that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie.

Janet, your letter identifies you as yet another unwitting victim of the latest “Big Lie”!

You write that the Kiryas Joel School District (KJSD) is really a “private school (can you send your child there?)”

Allow me to clear up a very basic misconception. The KJ School District educates only special needs and severely handicapped children; its current enrollment is 257 students. Kiryas Joel’s other 5,500 children attend religious privately funded schools. As a member of the New York State Department of Education KJSD evaluates children from the entire County for Early Intervention and Early Childhood Intervention programs. As a matter of fact, KJSD constantly educates children from communities other than its own.

You went on to ask: “Is the food kosher?”

Yes the food is kosher. NYS Department of Education guidelines requires School Districts to serve fods that are supportive of the students’ cultures. You then write: “The women are not allowed to drive (it’s the 21st century).”

Are you saying that a prerequisite for living in 21 st century America is that you rid yourself of your culture, your beliefs and your values?

You continue: “The KJ community doesn’t want Monroe to have a new library.”

This is just wholly untrue. If it were, would the “KJ community” have voted overwhelmingly, in 2003, to support the library budget increase?

You continue: “Would it be a public library if KJ had one?”

As it happens, the “KJ community” has been paying library taxes for the past 27 years and it received precious little in return. I should really ask you, is the Monroe library really PUBLIC when 45% of its taxpayers don’t enjoy its benefits? When the KJ library becomes a reality it will be just as public as the Monroe library. The KJ School District is living proof of that.

Janet, there are people out there who spread vicious and malicious “big lies” about Kiryas Joel. If there is any comparison to 1938, it is to the extent that fair-minded people such as you are being drawn in by their lies. Please understand that what they’re doing is dangerous. Do your research; verify my statements and you’ll see just how irresponsible they are. Stay in touch, I’d love to hear from you again.
